29. December 2020 – ADVOCACY
For the Yazidis, Nadia Murad’s appointment as UN Goodwill ambassador is a unique and historical event.
When Düzen Tekkal met Nadia two years ago for the first time in Iraq and they sat together on the sandy groundsheet of a tent in a refugee camp, she would not have dreamt of being together with Amal Clooney at the United Nations in New York.
In her speech, Nadia underlined Germany’s crucial role during the refugee crisis and thanked especially the country Baden-Württemberg that staged a Special Quota Program granting asylum to more than 1000 Yazidi women. It was, therefore, all the more gratifying that the responsible minister, Theresia Bauer, and the head of the Special Quota Program, Michael Blume, were present in New York today.
It was a good day for the Yazidis; however, we should not forget that the genocides still going on. The international community, which was present at Nadia’s appointment today, needs to act.
