HÁWAR — My Journey to Genocide

HÁWAR had its world premiere in 2015, not long after the so-called “Islamic State” committed genocide against the Yazidis, and was shown in international institutions such as the United Nations, the German Bundestag, the European Parliament around the globe.

HÁWAR tells of the journey of HAWAR.help founder and chairwoman Düzen Tekkal and her father Seyhmus back to their roots. In 2014, the journalist, who lives a happy life in Germany with her family, traveled for the first time to the origin of her faith, to the Yazidi settlement areas in northern Iraq. There, where the terrorist militia of the Islamic State commits inconceivable atrocities.

DOCUMENTARYJOURNEY IRAQ

AWARENESS AND POLITICAL ADVOCACY

TESTIMONIALS

  • The HÁWAR.help documentary gave us the opportunity to show the world that the UN stands in solidarity with every victim of ISIS crimes and every survivor of sexual violence.

Pramila Patten, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict

  • Even 6 years after the beginning of the violence of the so-called “IS” against the Yazidi population in Iraq, it remains unimaginable what happened then and still has to shock and awaken us.

Dr. Gerd Müller, Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development

  • These crimes cannot remain unpunished. Nearly 3,000 Yazidi women are still reported missing. Far too often, women are the main victims of armed conflict. The fight against sexual violence is a focus of our work, as it is for HÁWAR.help.

    Anne-Marie Descôtes, French Embassy Berlin

  • HÁWAR.help’s work provides us with important insights into ways the international community can ensure that perpetrators of sexual violence in conflicts are held accountable and that justice is delivered to survivors.

    Rachel King, British Embassy Berlin

  • The genocide of the Yazidis by the “IS” still continues to have an effect. We {…} have a duty to ensure that these traumas are not passed down through generations.

    Annalena Baerbock, Chairwomen Bündis90/Die Grünen
